The interwebs’ newest starlet is a 21-year-old from the Bay Area who goes by Kreayshawn but whose real (and i do mean real white) name is Natassia Zolot. Today, I crown her “Carefree White Girl Of The Week.” Unfortunately, this chick has a crippling case of the Elvis syndrome. Homegirl bites the (actual) swag off of entertainers of color and then gets a million dollar record deal and superstardom. Why? Well I think it’s because she is a pretty, young, white, carefree, approachable girl. All of that would be fine and easy to blame on “the industry” except that she’s irreverent about all of it. Below is my list of my gripes with regard to her intenso appropriation.
1: STOP SAYING ‘SWAG’
GQ INTERVIEW: “When I go out to a party I make a point to wear crazy little tube tops and oversize jackets with baggy jeans. Right now, I’m at the studio wearing Jordans and a leather jacket—just fresh, you feel me? I usually have to thrift shop at Goodwill, which is why I have crazy swag. But I’ve been getting free clothes, so now you might see me up in those.”
LYRIC FROM “GUCCI GUCCI”: “I got the swag/and it’s pumpin out my ovaries”
2: HER FLOW
My friend described Kreayshawn’s new hit, ‘Gucci Gucci’ as a Das Racist/Lil B Based God hybrid. She can rap so maybe she should try her own approach.
3. SHE DOES NOT HAVE IT RACIALLY TOGETHER AT ALL
The name of her “crew” is “White Girl Mob Crew,” which, like, c’mon girl, really? Her embracing whiteness would be all good if she were actually doing something that addressed the fact that she has bitten off every single person of color that has ever rapped. Ever. But all she does is appropriate the music of people of color and make it “cute” and “swag” herself out and go on about her privileged way. And that’s mostly wack but not “end of the world” wack. What is end of the world wack is this:
Is it weird when you go up to these gangster types wearing, like, Minnie Mouse ears?
People know me out there—when I talk you can tell I’m not trying to be a fake rapper. I’m from Oakland. This is what I do. If I was from Minnesota, this probably wouldn’t be my lane.
What is a “fake” rapper? And why does a rapper from Minnesota have less cred than her? Not sure what gives her the ability to decide who is a “real” rapper and who isn’t. Just kind of think she is trying to floss here but instead comes off as being super entitled and racially stiff. What she should be saying is “i come out of a tradition where my face isn’t generally seen and so when i go up to gangster types wearing this stupid ass mickey mouse shit I feel empowered because i’m expanding what it means to be a rapper.” Not quite sure what “lane” to which she is referring but it certainly isn’t the authentic one. BECAUSE AUTHENTICITY DOESNT EXIST IDIOTA.

4. SHE SAYS “NIGGA”
She tweeted: “People are actin so funny omg lol… I got 200k views… not 200k dollars… WTF YOU WANT FROM A N*GGA?! *DMX VOICE*,”
I feel unresolved about white people using the word “nigger.” In her explanation she expresses that it’s a word that is circulated around low-income communities among many different types of people. Kreayshawn claims that she uses it because she grew up with it, that it is part of the fabric of her vocabulary because of her class. While it makes me wildly uncomfortable that she should have used it in the first place I am trying to locate myself within her experience and be compassionate. But on the other hand my internal voice is saying: “damn well she may have said it with her “sisters” all her life and that’s whatever it is but now that she has made it out ‘the ghetto’ and she is still using the word freely it kind of makes me rethink her whole premise for using the word in the first place. Ones socio-economic location may be quite arbitrary when it comes to a white person saying nigger. The word, regardless of context reaches many different people and those people may not see that the white person saying it is coming from “the ghetto,” those people that hear the white person saying nigger see the white person as a white person saying “nigger.” And when that white person says “nigger” and they are famous it tells other white people that they can also say nigger even if they are not from “the ghetto.”
She names a lot of the reason’s why I seriously dislike this chick.
